Codex 5-hour limit and usage window

The short window and weekly allowance answer different questions. A healthy weekly balance does not guarantee immediate five-hour capacity.

Two clocks can be active

A short usage window can constrain bursts while the weekly counter limits total sustained use. Because they are independent, planning only against the weekly percentage can miss the immediate bottleneck.

When the short window matters

Long agent runs, high reasoning effort, repeated tool calls, and several concurrent tasks can concentrate usage. If the interface identifies the five-hour window as the blocker, waiting for that window is different from conserving the weekly budget.

  • Read the exact counter and reset time in your account.
  • Separate urgent interactive work from deferrable batch work.
  • Avoid treating a public broad reset as proof every short window updated instantly.

Was the Codex 5-hour limit removed?

Searches for the five-hour limit being gone or removed often follow an interface change or temporary broad reset. Do not infer a permanent policy change from a missing counter: check the current official plan documentation and your account before relying on additional capacity.

Why we keep it out of the weekly formula

Combining two independent windows into one score creates false precision. The MVP helper evaluates weekly pacing only and explains short-window constraints separately.
