Does Codex reset at midnight?
Do not plan around midnight unless the official counter explicitly points there. Most confusion comes from treating a rolling usage window like a calendar-day allowance.
Midnight is not a universal reset
Codex users can have short and weekly windows tied to account activity or a displayed schedule. Those windows do not need to align with midnight in UTC, your local timezone, or OpenAI headquarters time.
A reset that happened near midnight for one person is not enough to establish a global rule. The relevant evidence is the timestamp shown beside your own limiting counter.
Why midnight sometimes appears correct
Timezone conversion can turn a UTC daytime event into local midnight. A broad reset may also happen near a calendar boundary by coincidence. Finally, a user may first notice renewed capacity the next morning even though the underlying reset occurred earlier.
How rolling windows differ
A rolling or account-anchored window renews after its defined interval rather than at the start of every calendar day. This is why waiting until 00:00 can fail when the account shows several more hours remaining.
- Read the counter name.
- Record the complete timestamp and timezone.
- Distinguish five-hour capacity from weekly capacity.
- Check for a separate broad reset announcement.
What to do tonight
If work is blocked, use the official countdown rather than guessing. Defer non-urgent high-cost tasks, reduce unnecessary concurrent runs, or plan for the displayed renewal. A public tracker cannot replace the private timer attached to your account.
